RESIDENTS of the RUBY, ALASKA Mining DistrictIncluding the towns of Ruby, Long and PoormanFrom the discovery of gold in 1906 to WW2 I am attempting to provide genealogy information as well as give recognition to the people who resided, or at least spent some time, in Ruby and the surrounding area during it's early days. So often only the rich, powerful or famous people in our society are remembered. This is my effort to keep some of the Alaskan pioneers from being forgotten. There is a story that goes with each of these names. In the gold rush days of Alaska some men would come to a new gold camp and become part of the community while others would do some prospecting and if they didn't make a big strike would move on. So some of the names on this list are people who may have only spent a brief time in the Ruby mining district. Approximately 250 people are listed here because they had an unclaimed letter at the Ruby post office in 1912. Were they out mining on an area creek or had they moved on? In many cases we may never know. When trying to find more information about an individual on this list I would suggest investigating details from the prior gold rush areas of Iditarod/Flat, Fairbanks or Nome as some prospectors and merchants moved from one gold strike to the next. Many people had been in the north country since the Klondike rush of '98 so a search of the Dawson archives could be productive. A search of members of The Pioneers of Alaska may also reveal information about a person. If you know of other names, have additional information about these people or have pictures of them your willing to share please email me. My information comes from Census data*, Military draft registration, visiting the Ruby cemetery**, history books, old photos and friends or family of the early residents. This is a work in progress and I welcome any help and information you have to offer. ~ Walt Larson Note: For the most part I am no longer updating information on this page. These names have been included in the genealogy section of my web site Alaska Gold Rush. Additional names are added there. |

I have not yet had time to search the 1910 census information. ** The pioneer graves at the Ruby cemetery are in a sad state of neglect. Rotting grave markers have fallen over and appear to be scattered from their original location. Many are hard to read. Most of the town’s current population were residents of nearby Kokrines who relocated to Ruby after WW II and have little relationship to the old gold rush era graves so there is little incentive to maintain them. I visited the cemetery at Long in July 2007 and found the area is very overgrown with brush and trees. The only grave marker I saw was a large stone monument for Theo Matheson. There were indentations in the ground indicating other graves but the original wooden markers have long since rotted away leaving no source for who is buried in them. *** I started out with the idea that World War Two would be a natural a cut-off period but in tracing the linage of early residents and the history of Ruby some information and desendants flow into a more recient time. Thus you will find some residents listed that lived in Ruby after WWII and a few who may still reside there. Click here for information on Alaska books, websites and other sources of information. Some decendants of Ruby's early residents have expressed a desire to visit the community. Click here for information on transportation and accomidations. I hope you find the information provided here of value and that it may aid in the search for your ancestors. As I have invested a lot of time and effort to compile this list and it's details I would appreciate your giving credit to this web site as a reference when you use the information.
